Each year at the GSPCA we hold Dog and Cat First Aid Courses.

For over a decade we have been running dog and cat first aid courses which help teach owners and pet lovers how to save the life of their pet or animal.

On Tuesday 6 dog owners and 1 member of the GSPCA Work 2 Benefit placement attended the first GSPCA Dog First Aid Course of 2024. There is another later in the year and next week we have the Cat First Aid on Tuesday 19th March 2024

GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne who has over 25 years working in the field of animal rescue runs the training and with over 3000 animals through the doors every year at the GSPCA the team see cases of animal first aid on a daily basis here in Guernsey.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We had a lovely evening on Tuesday teaching dog first aid to the 7 attendees.”

“I took the course but Seb Goman Senior Animal Care Assistant was also helping as she progresses her training.”

“The group were fantastic and all so keen to learn.”

“At the end everyone got a certificate and we got a quick pic with some of the group.”

“The next GSPCA Dog First Aid Course isn’t until Tuesday 12th November but the next Cat First Aid Tuesday 19th March 2024.”

“From Police Officers to GSPCA team members, members of the public to an assistance dog we have trained a real variety of individuals wanting to learn how to save dogs lives.”

“Those that have attended have learnt to save dogs, cats and other animals lives and although we hope those attending never have to use the skills at least they will now have the knowledge of what to do in many circumstances.”

“We have been running dog and cat first aid courses for over seven years and have trained nearly 400 participants to help save animals lives.”

"We have ‘Casper’ who is our model first aid dog a bit like the Annie doll many may know for humans and he is a great way to show and learn how to carry out CPR on an unconscious dog."

“From dealing with a dogs and cats chocking to heat stroke we cover a huge range of topics and life saving techniques that could really help save a pets life.”

“We always hope that the skills learned will not be needed but we have been told of circumstances of these skills helping in real life situations.”

"As owners of pets our worst fear is not knowing what to do if our four legged friend has an injury and this training helps pet owners learn and understand ways to help save your pets life."

“It is £25 per person and you can book online or call 257261.”

“A huge thank you to all that supported past events and we look forward seeing those keen to learn in the upcoming events.”
