Wayfarers Travel has issued advice on post-Brexit changes to Passport rules which could affect islanders.
If the UK leaves the European Union without a Brexit deal, new rules will come into effect from 30 March 2019 for British travellers, including Guernsey residents, to the Schengen area which includes most countries in Europe, such as Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Switzerland and many others.
From the 30 March 2019, British passports, including those issued in the Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man, would need to have been issued within the last 10 years on the date of arrival in a Schengen country.
Passports should have at least six months’ remaining validity from the traveller’s date of arrival in, and at least three months’ remaining validity on the traveller’s date of departure from, a Schengen country.
More importantly, if a traveller has renewed a 10 year adult passport before its expiry, any extra months added to the passport’s expiry date will not count towards this.
Destination guidance can also be found on the FCO Travel Advice website.
