The Medical Specialist Group has been donated a piece of eyecare equipment that will help glaucoma sufferers and people with other eye health conditions.

The handheld iCare home tonometer allows the user to measure their own intraocular eye pressure (IOP), the details of which are uploaded to a cloud database and are available to the ophthalmologist and the patient to view.

It is ideally suited for those who are unable to leave their home for outpatient appointments.

These regular measurements are important in that they can reveal the need for an urgent change in medication or signpost the need to visit an ophthalmologist for further investigation.

Post-surgery IOP monitoring can also begin immediately, thanks to the gentle measurement technique, and it is an especially useful device for patients who have uncontrolled IOP.

The MSG plan to lend the tonometer to glaucoma patients as needed and will calibrate, service and be accountable for the maintenance of the equipment.

MSG Ophthalmologist, Suzanne Dorey, said: “This is a fantastic piece of technology, which is going to make it much easier for people to be able to monitor their own eye health. We are so grateful for Specsavers’ support and are excited to be able to offer this additional diagnostic tool for people with really volatile eye conditions.”
