A prospective young pilot has been awarded a bursary with Specsavers Aviation, which included 10 hours of free flying training.

Joe Trenchard, 22, won the bursary, allowing him to take a significant step on the road toward becoming a fully qualified pilot.

"I am so thankful to Specsavers for this amazing opportunity. Being awarded the bursary has allowed me to gain 10 additional hours of flight training, assisting the progression of my private pilot’s licence, which I am due to complete within the next few weeks," he said.

"This financial support has enabled me to start planning sooner than expected to undertake my professional flight training. I am also so grateful for the mentor support from Specsavers pilots who have already assisted me with advice and information on how to progress my flying qualifications.

"It’s always been my dream to fly and Specsavers have helped me take more steps towards making my dream a reality."

This year, Specsavers Aviation also offered two additional awards. Thomas Clarke received two hours of flying training, while a 45-minuite trial lesson went to Alex Robert. All training was provided by Guernsey Flying Training in a four-seater Piper Warrior aircraft.

Specsavers Captain, Adam Bright, said: "I think that the bursary is a fantastic opportunity for someone who’s always wanted to become a commercial pilot, as it will help them on their way to become one. The mentorship we provide as part of the prize can be very valuable during the commercial training process. It’s really great to inspire and support local budding pilots, everyone in the team is passionate about it."
