Specsavers eyes up 30 years' PR experience with new staff

Thursday 07 March 2019

Specsavers has made two new appointments to its Public Relations team.

Jenny Wye joins the company as a PR consultant specialising in eye health and clinical expertise, while national press office manager Paul Ainsworth is responsible for its audiology PR and all public relations activity in Ireland.

Together they bring more than 30 years’ communications and PR experience to the 13-strong UK team.

Director of Public Relations for Specsavers, Jo Delbridge said:

"Jenny and Paul will strengthen an already robust team who support our 900 optical and audiology stores throughout the UK and Ireland, helping to build our reputation as the leading business looking after the eye health and hearing of the nation.

Specsavers' Jo Delbridge said the company has the largest in-house marketing department in the sector.

"Public relations plays a vital role in maintaining our brand profile, supporting our corporate responsibility programme and community activity at store level, as well as working with key stakeholders to reinforce our clinical expertise."

Ms Wye, a former senior PR manager at Vision Express, has more than twenty years PR experience in the leisure, brewing and healthcare industries, and five years occupying managerial comms roles within the NHS. She was named in-house professional of the year by the PR industry trade body the PRCA in 2018.

She said: "I’m delighted to be joining Specsavers. PR is vitally important in all industries but particularly so in optics, which is in a transformational phrase as it faces advances in medical technologies, alongside an ageing population that is putting unprecedented demand on healthcare services.

"I’m passionate about encouraging more people to prioritise their eye health. Sight is the sense people fear losing the most, and with around two million people in the UK living with sight loss, it’s crucial that we do all we can to highlight the importance of an eye test and the expertise Specsavers can offer to its customers."

Paul Ainsworth was previously the PR manager for Aurigny and before that a senior reporter at the Guernsey Press.

On his appointment, he said: "I’m privileged to have joined an organisation which is leading the way for customer care, expertise and value. Specsavers is a company renowned for putting its customers first and the Public Relations team plays a vital role in improving communications with customers, store partners and key stakeholders, while enhancing the reputation of the brand.

"What also appeals to me is the culture at Specsavers, nurturing employees and helping us to achieve the most we possibly can."
