Russian Firebird to be conjured at Guernsey Music Centre's Winter Concert

Friday 26 January 2018

Some of the island’s most advanced young musicians will conjure up the mythical Russian firebird creature during the Guernsey Music Centre’s winter concert sponsored by Butterfield.

The Guernsey Youth Orchestra, Youth Choir and the Concert Wind Band will be performing at the concert at St James Concert Hall on Saturday, 27th January.

The orchestra will be conducted by Mervyn Grand, the Concert Wind Band by Tim Wright, and Rachel Wright will direct the Youth Choir.

The programme features Stravinsky’s Firebird composed by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky for a ballet that featured the mythical creature. Finlandia by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius is also part of the programme, along with a medley of three gospel songs.

Mervyn Grand, Head of Guernsey Music Service, said: "We are very grateful to Butterfield, our long-term sponsor of this annual concert, as the support enables our young musicians to demonstrate their high level of musicianship in the excellent acoustics of St James."

Lindsay Ozanne, Deputy Managing Director at Butterfield Trust (Guernsey) Limited, added: "The Guernsey Music Centre’s winter concert is a real showcase for our island’s incredible young musicians. Butterfield is proud to be supporting this year’s concert and the Centre, which does much to nurture musical talent."

Tickets for the concert are available from the St. James box office on 01481 711361 or online from www.guernseytickets.gg.
