A Guernsey born and educated architectural student has been awarded two prizes at his university for his work.

James Langlois won the 'West London Student of the Year' and the ‘Diversity and Inclusion’ award for his Fourth Year Project.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), ‘London Student Awards 2023’ were recently held at the RIBA HQ, London.

Mr Langlois was honoured with his two awards for his project entitled ‘Reawakening Monteruga’.

He had chosen his project site and compiled his own brief on a trip to Puglia, Italy, before presenting his project to an audience at the RIBA describing his intention to rejuvenate a once small but vibrant agrarian commune, abandoned in the 1980’s.

Mr Langlois described how derelict buildings could be refurbished with the addition of contemporary interventions with a sustainable approach including accommodation modules built of bio-composite blocks from tobacco, a traditional crop grown in the area.

Mr Langlois is currently in his 2nd year, Master of Architecture course at Westminster University having completed his 3 year BA Hons in Architecture at Liverpool University and a one -year placement at London based architectural practice Wilkinson Eyre.
