Long service awarded by Citizens Advice as it seeks new helpers

Friday 05 April 2024

Citizens Advice Guernsey has honoured three long-term volunteers for their years of service for the charity and the wider community.

Gina Atkinson has racked up 25 years with the charity, while Nick Gaudion has achieved 15 years and Andrew Deane five.

The charity is looking to recruit new volunteers, who will primarily offer trained advice to anyone who needs it.

Ms Atkinson started in 1998 after her children got older and said the challenge of helping people overcome problems is rewarding.

“I have seen volunteers come, go and return, but the general atmosphere in the office has always been friendly and open-minded. Perhaps this is because one of the first lessons we all learn is to be ‘friendly, confidential, and non-judgmental',” she said.

Mr Gaudion advised, but also helped train general and money advisers for a third of this 15-year service. He says helping people navigate complex and distressing issues through a professional and audited organisation is satisfying.

“It is a great pleasure to be part of a caring team with a wealth of life experience and a desire to contribute to the community.” He described the team as “almost like an extended family,” he said.

Mr Deane started just before retirement to feel part of a team: “Citizens Advice Guernsey assists those who find themselves in unfortunate life situations, often through no fault of their own, with no one to turn to for help. The service we are providing then becomes a lifeline, particularly to the most vulnerable. It is incredibly rewarding helping people in these situations."

Anyone who wants to be part of the service, including customer facing and administrative roles, opportunities are available. Evening and weekend work is now possible, including from home.

The senior committee is also looking for non-executive directors.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer can attend a recruitment evening at its offices on the Bridge, on 11 April at18:00 until 19:30. Find out more about the varied roles available or call 242734 or email admin@citizensadvice.org.gg for further information.
