The 2018 Healthcare Bursary winners have been announced with women in Alderney benefiting from the winning project.
This year, 15 entries were submitted with a shortlist of five selected. These five then presented their ideas to a panel of judges who selected the overall winner.
The winners were announced at a presentation event held at The Farmhouse on Wednesday 14 November.
There, Elaine Torrance and Annabel Nicholas were awarded the first prize of £2,000 to help fund the development of ‘The Iris Project’ which aims to introduce electronic assisted communication, and thereby improve satisfaction levels of midwifery services for women in Alderney.
Ms Nicholas said: “This prize money will allow us to purchase electronic devices, as well as provide midwifery time to the project.”
The second prize of £1,000 was awarded to Chantelle Dodsworth and Graham Durham, whose project hopes to improve bereavement care within the emergency department and help the grieving process for families.
Mark De Garis, Chief Secretary HSC said: “I would like to thank Insurance Corporation for its continued support of the bursary scheme which plays an important role in supporting colleagues to bring forward new ideas which help better support those in need of Health & Social Care’s services.
"The bursary was founded by Peter Walpole some 27 years ago over which time it has delivered tremendous benefit to our community and colleagues who work across health and care. I am exceptionally grateful to Mandy Hunt, Managing Director of Insurance Corporation for the close personal interest she takes in the bursary as well as her active involvement in the judging. It was impressive to see such a consistently high quality of entries. I was also struck by the very real passion and dedication from entrants to make a positive improvement to the services HSC provides which came across very strongly”
Sarah Beatty, Broker Development Manager at Insurance Corporation said “This bursary would not be possible without the hard work and dedication from the entrants themselves. Our thanks go to the staff at HSC who take the time to complete our bursary applications and take part in our awards to benefit patients and service users. Understandably, we are very proud to have made this contribution to local life for so long, and long may it continue!”
The competition, which is in its 27th year, is open to all HSC staff members who submit ideas to improve health or social care in the islands.
