Guernsey Leadership Shadowing winner announced

The 2024 IoD Guernsey Leadership Shadowing scheme saw Ladies' College student Talia Godet awarded first place and a Distinction, at the annual awards evening.

Talia shadowed Mark Mapp of St John Ambulance Service, and she presented her observations and learnings from her time at the organisation as part of the scheme.

Ten students were shortlisted for the finals following presentations from more than 50 students who took part in the scheme with Ava Davenport from The Sixth Form Centre and Molly Robinson from The Ladies’ College awarded Distinctions.

Archie Swash-Hardie and Sam Brown from Elizabeth College, Lea Phillips, Emma Holt, Hannah Kennedy and Lucy Clarke from The Ladies’ College and Jess Duncan from The Sixth Form Centre were all awarded merit certificates.

Last week's awards evening saw all of the finalists present their findings to the panel of judges alongside an audience of business leaders, fellow pupils, teachers and family at The OGH.

The audience was also treated to an inspirational talk from Alex Holmes, a champion for young people and mental health. He is a deputy CEO of the charity The Diana Award, founder of Anti-Bullying Pro, an ambassador for Queens Young Leaders and a Director of BBC Children in Need.

One of the scheme’s coordinators, Karen Power of the IoD Committee, said, “the Scheme is a significant team effort between industry, the students and teachers. Sincere thanks to Camille Norman Ross Burrows (Source Recruitment) for facilitating the placement, Euan Melrose (IoD Committee) and Candice Vermeulen (IoD Officer) for their input, along with finals night judges: IoD Guernsey Chair, Glen Tonks; Ingrid Waterfield (KPMG); Brooke Kenyon (Orchard PR); and Julia Martin (Source Recruitment).”

Linda Johnson, KPMG Partner and co-coordinator of the Scheme, said: “The students' presentations demonstrated brilliant observations about leadership and the standard of presentations was once again exceptionally high. As always, it was extremely difficult to pick a winner, but Talia impressed the judges with her flawless presentation and insights into leadership in action. KPMG was also delighted to bring Alex Holmes to Guernsey – sharing his knowledge and expertise on anti-bullying, self-esteem and what it means to be a young leader.”

KPMG is the primary sponsor of the scheme and is supported by Source Recruitment, who allocate the students to suitable placements, matching them to leaders. Orchard PR provides presentation skills training to all the students.
