Guernsey Electricity is supporting a local entrepreneur’s first Sustainability September Guernsey Challenge that is open to all islanders.
Kay Davidson, founder of local business Askay Style, is challenging individuals and families to undertake a daily challenge for 30 days in September in an effort to encourage sustainable thinking and living. The challenges include planting flowers to attract bees, using a guppy bag to trap micro fibres in washing machines, and reusing plastic bags from food wrapping.
Working alongside Ms Davidson, Guernsey Electricity launched the challenge at its Seafront Sunday stall in St Peter Port on 1 September. Islanders were invited to sign up online to receive a card with the 30 suggested challenges to tick off. Participants are encouraged to do one or more of the challenges for 30 days, or attempt all 30.
Individuals or families that successfully complete all 30 challenges will be in with a chance of winning some sustainable gifts. Participants will need to submit photos of their completed challenges to Guernsey Electricity for judging.
Ms Davidson said: “I came up with the idea of the challenge for two main reasons. First, I’ve found that one off or one day initiatives to protect our environment often don’t lead to changes in habits or are as effective in getting the message across. So, I wanted to make a 30 day challenge in the hope that it will make a real difference with long lasting effects.
“Secondly, we all know some of what we should be doing differently but need a little encouragement to actually do them and adopt them as habits. It would be great to get people talking about the challenges they’ve tried so we can all learn together and have fun while doing so. Guernsey Electricity’s support in helping me achieve this is hugely appreciated.”
Staff at Guernsey Electricity will also take part in the challenge.
Guernsey Electricity communications and digital advisor, Clare Packman said: “As a company we strongly believe that small changes can make a real difference and sustainable thinking is encouraged across our operations. When we heard about Kay’s idea of launching a sustainability challenge we wanted to get behind it right away and encourage staff to get involved.”
