Whatever event you are planning, Sprinkle of Magic is there to help.
Set up as a hobby just before lockdown, it is now a full-time project.
This is the latest in our series celebrating the value of Guernsey's small businesses, Express has sat down with the owners of the many places that make the island a unique place to live, work, and shop to find out: What makes a small business tick? What issues do they face, and why do entrepreneurs choose to launch in Guernsey?
Today, we catch up with Sprinkle of Magic owner Callum Penney...
Owners’ names:
Callum Penney. My brother Kevin is also involved in the business as he handles the website and marketing.
What do you offer?
An extensive selection of partyware, decorations, balloons, gifting options, and homeware, catering to a wide variety of occasions. In addition to our products, we provide comprehensive party services, including venue transformations, children’s parties, weddings, and much more. Whether customers are planning a small gathering or a large event, we are here to help make it unforgettable.
When did you set up and why?
We set up just before lockdown in 2020 as a hobby and it grew from there leading to full time employment for me.
What has been the most challenging part of running this business?
Finding the right premises for a physical store, especially in the current financial climate. Previously, we operated entirely online, and while we continue to receive a substantial number of online orders, having a shop allows us to engage more directly with our customers.
This face-to-face interaction has become invaluable in building stronger relationships and enhancing the overall customer experience.
What sets you apart?
Our wide range of bespoke products, many of which are unique to our business on the island. We also take pride in offering Guernsey’s very first Balloon Bar, right in our store.
Our focus is on giving customers as much choice as possible, allowing us to help create truly personalised and memorable celebrations.
This commitment to variety and uniqueness ensures we can make each event special and tailored to individual needs.
Perhaps unusually for a small business, we run our own e-commerce site, so everything stocked in the shop is available for purchase online.
What goals do you have for your business?
My primary goal is to continually grow the business and expand our range of products and services, ensuring that customers can find everything they need in one convenient place. I am always exploring new ways to enhance our offerings and elevate the customer experience. It’s all about moving onwards and upwards!
What’s your favourite thing about living/working in Guernsey?
Being so close to the beach at all times. There’s something so special about Guernsey’s beaches – they’re unbeatable, offering a perfect escape.
Favourite way to unwind?
Exploring the other beautiful islands of Herm, Sark, and Alderney. There’s something so refreshing about discovering new spots. That said, I also love to take time to relax at home, kick back in front of the TV, and just enjoy some quiet downtime.
