Cyber security threats on the rise, warns IT firm

Tuesday 23 January 2018

Resolution IT's Senior Information Security Consultant believes the dangers of data theft and reputational damage are "clearly on the increase".

This comes as recent news has said the British Army will be investing more resources into defending the nation's security against cyber attacks.

James Kelsh said: "Today’s cyber criminals are getting more and more sophisticated with their methods of trying to extract money or data from us.

"In the early 1990’s there was, on average, one new virus every hour. Fast forward to now and it’s well over 13,000. With that level of threat and the digital landscape continually changing, coupled with the imminent implementation of GDPR, I can’t stress enough how important it is for everyone to make sure they have taken all reasonable measures to secure and protect their digital data."

Mr Kelsh added that, for companies in particular, huge fines would be levied if they hadn't taken the correct measures and suffer a data breach:

"As one of only two IT managed service providers in Guernsey who offer the UK government recognised Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus certification, we know how important being certified has become.

"Many companies are increasingly considering only doing business with companies that can prove they have taken all necessary steps to protect their date."
