Four staff members from accountancy firm Cleland & Co will be representing Guernsey at this summer's NatWest International Island Games - with three competing and one volunteering.
Samantha Cox, Dave Mosely and Chloe Domaille are competing with Janet Unitt volunteering as part of the St John Ambulance Service.
With a quarter of the Guernsey-owned firm's staff involved in the Games, Cleland & Co said its flexible working scheme has enabled them to practice and train with additional flexibility for the week of the Games competitions.
Ms Unitt is Cleland & Co’s Company Secretarial Administrator and an experienced first aider with St John. She'll be at the higher-risk events working alongside St John volunteers joining from Australia, Gibraltar and the UK.
Director Ms Cox is competing in the basketball with Cleland & Co also providing t-shirts for the Guernsey women’s team.
She said: “This is the first time we’ve had anyone compete in an Island Games, let alone three people, so it’s a great achievement. I think it’s really important when working to have something outside of work to commit and focus to, bringing that good work-life balance.
“Together with Janet’s work with St John Ambulance – keeping competitors and spectators safe and healthy – there’s going to be a very strong Cleland & Co presence at this year’s Games. We’re hoping that the rest of the team will come along and support us when they can too. I’m really looking forward to competing in July.”
Associate Director Mr Mosely is in the triathlon team.
“My preparation is going well," he said. "I’ve just come back from eight days of training in Lanzarote with some of the other men’s triathlon Guernsey Island Games team. I’m looking forward to a home Island Games and there being lots of local support, including from my friends and family.”
Golfer, Ms Domaille is a Trainee Accountant and said she has benefited from the support of her colleagues during her training.
“I’m looking forward to representing Guernsey and I can’t wait to see lots of green supporters flooding the golf course. I think we have a good chance at winning team and individual medals this year, as we have a strong youthful team, and the home advantage.
“Cleland have been extremely supportive in giving me time off when I have training or competitions to play in, which has allowed me to continue with my goals for golf whilst working my day job.”
