CI pumpkins available ahead of Halloween

Ahead of Halloween Waitrose & Partners shops are selling Channel Islands grown pumpkins.

The pumpkin crop has been harvested by Master Farms in St Brelade, Jersey, and joins the expanding number of locally produced vegetables grown for the supermarket.

The pumpkins have been grown outdoors by dairy and vegetable farmers the Le Maistre family who, following this year’s success, plan to increase its crop even further next year.

Phil Le Maistre Jr., Farm Manager said: “Our pumpkin seeds were initially cultivated indoors before being planted out in June, soon after our Jersey Royals crop came to an end. Picking is now complete and we have produced more than 300 pumpkins for Waitrose.”

Gary Grace, Waitrose & Partners’ fresh produce buyer, said that working and supporting local farmers and other Channel Islands food suppliers is a crucial part of the business.

“It’s fantastic that we are increasingly able to work alongside farmers like the Le Maistre family to deliver year-round quality local produce for our Channel Island customers.”

Master Farms has been working with Waitrose & Partners for several years, supplying a variety of vegetables to help expand its locally produced offering.
