Aladdin's Cave celebrates 40 years

Local retailer, Aladdin's Cave is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Despite having seen a number of new developments and appointments over the years, the store has not failed in keeping its family roots.

Established in 1979 by Eric and Margaret Mahy, the store followed on from the Capelles Camping Centre which they had run for many years. However, given the seasonal nature of camping equipment, the pair decided to expand their offering to include garden furniture and kitchenware.

Mr and Mrs Mahy later introduced toys to their stock, which proved to be hugely successful.

Their children, Julie and Jason eventually joined the team along with their daughter's husband Rob Edwards, who became Assistant Manager.

In the year 2000, Mr and Mrs Mahy became full owners of the entire Les Canus premises, in what was their 21ist year in operation.

They retired in 2008, leaving Jason Mahy and Mr Edwards as Managing Directors.

Aladdin's Cave has seen more growth over recent years with the building of an adjoining unit to incorporate Mick's Fishing Supplies and the opening of Cafe at the Cave.

"It's been about offering good service with a choice of quality goods at competitive prices," said Mr Edwards. "it never stops. We are always looking to the next thing with some exciting developments coming soon.

"We're excited about the next decade and how we can continue to further cement the Cave's reputation as a quality local retailer in the island.

"We are an honest local business that is passionate about serving islanders and our local community."

So far, four generations of the family have worked in the business.
