Sure Community Foundation donates to the GSPCA

The GSPCA would like to say a huge thank you to both Sure Community Foundation and Helen Holmes for their amazing donations of iPhones to help ensure they have operational lines for their 24/7 service.

The GSPCA have been running their #GSPCACoronavirusCrisisAppeal since the start of the crisis, but there are always key pieces of equipment that they require to ensure they can operate and having recently had an issue with one of their emergency phones which failed they launched an appeal for a new iPhone and cannot thank the Sure Community Foundation and Helen Holmes who donated a handset each.

These handsets are used to ensure their emergency phone is with a member of the team both in the ambulance on call and one at the Shelter 24/7 and both have a number of apps which helps with communication and other essential applications in their operations.

Both handsets have been set up and one is in operation and the other is an emergency spare to ensure if they have issues again they have a quick replacement.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said, “We are hugely grateful to the Sure Community Foundation and Helen Holmes for the much needed iPhones which help ensure we have handsets for our 24/7 emergency work.”

“Spring is always the busiest time of year at the GSPCA for animals in need and even with the coronavirus crisis we are helping rescue and care for animals around the clock.”

“Sadly the GSPCA emergency handset failed recently and on putting out an appeal within moments we had the kind offers from Helen and the Sure Community Foundation.”

“The emergency phone is operated 24/7 with our team in the day and our essential volunteer emergency wardens at night and has a number of applications so we can update messages online and share information with the member of the team on call at the GSPCA.”

“We also often have to use them to take pictures and videos of animals that might be suffering for evidence purposes or for rescue stories and releases to share with the public.”

“Due to the pandemic raising the funds needed to run the GSPCA has been a real challenge as we are unable to run our normal events and boarding is only really a handful of emergency animals instead of 30+ kennels of dogs and over 20 pens of cats bringing in funds so we launched the #GSPCACoronavirusCrisisAppeal .”

“With over 300 animals in our care and running costs of £2000 a day every penny saved or donated makes such a real difference with our 24/7 work helping the animals and community of Guernsey.”

“There are many ways to support our essential work from donating to our #GSPCACoronavirusCrisisAppeal to much needed items like the iPhones from Helen and the Sure Community Foundation.”

“We have an amazon wish list with lots of items we need if anyone is looking to donate goods which you can do online or buy locally and drop off at a collection point such as at Alliance or the large Co-op stores.”

“If you want to shop online here is a link to our GSPCA Amazon Wish List https://www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/25MJPPDAGXHL1?type=WishList but before heading there if you register with Easyfundraising then every purchase we can raise extra donations and to register please visit https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/guernseyspca/.”

“We also have a Wish List page on our website and we are currently in need of a new GSPCA Ambulance as one of our fleet has sadly gone to the garage in the sky.”

“To see our Wish List page please visit - http://www.gspca.org.gg/about/our-plans-wish-list.”

“The Wish list has items we really need from Butchers dog food to dustpans and brushes.”

“A huge thanks to all that have supported all of our appeals, we couldn’t do so much without your support.”

Here is the list of some items needed, but until the lockdown is lifted the GSPCA would ask donations (unless very large in which case call them on 01481 257261) to drop off at the collection points at the large Co-ops or Alliance as they are trying to limit the number of visitors to the GSPCA -

  • Butchers (they use loads for the hedgehogs and dogs)
  • Honey for the hedgehogs
  • Senior tinned/pouch cat food or applaws
  • Birdseed of any kind is very helpful
  • Small animal feed
  • Wood/paper based cat litter or Thomas cat litter
  • Fresh fruit and veg the animals love and they use daily - Kale, Parsley, Basil, chard, Cavolo Nero, Cress, coriander, carrots, spinach, raspberries and strawberries
  • Fairy liquid (use for washing oiled birds)
  • Non-bio washing powder
  • Surgical spirit
  • Cotton wool
  • Nitrile gloves (medium especially)
  • Face masks
  • Pump hand soap
  • Bin bags
  • Hand towel
  • Loo roll
  • Dustpan and brushes
  • Towels

Steve continued “We have had some amazing donations like these iPhones to those donating to our much needed #GSPCACoronavirusCrisisAppeal and if you would like to donate you can do so by calling 01481 257261, by post or online via our web page https://giving.gg/donate/event/5876/GSPCA-Coronavirus-Emergency-Appeal.”

“Another great way to supporting is by donating each month and to find out details please visit this web page http://www.gspca.org.gg/sites/default/files/Angel%20sponsor%20form%20special%202018%20new.pdf.”

“Without your support, the GSPCA couldn’t achieve so much caring and helping over 3000 animals every year.”

“If any business would like to support our work in any way from making donations to wish list items we would love to hear from you and please call us or email me steve@gspca.org.gg"

To make a donation by post please make cheques payable to 'GSPCA’ and post to GSPCA, Rue des Truchots, St Andrews, Guernsey, GY6 8UD.
