Guernsey Waste is providing advice for households who may be using kerbside recycling for the first time.
It comes after islanders were advised to stay at home and only make essential journeys, to help prevent the spread of coronavirus. Public waste and recycling sites, including the bring bank facilities, are closed until further notice.
More than 90% of households already use the kerbside service for most everyday recyclables, but some have preferred to keep using bring banks.
For those who have not used the service before, an easy to use guide to kerbside collections can be found at www.gov.gg/mybinnight. The website also includes information on what materials to put out each week.
For anyone who does not have access to a computer and requires help in getting started, Guernsey Waste’s phone line (01481 231234) will continue to be manned during normal hours (8.45am – 4.30pm Monday – Friday) but there may be a slight delay in response.
The blue and clear bags used for kerbside recycling are available for free from all the main food retailers, as well as food waste caddy liners. While the current restrictions are in place, households will not require a voucher to pick up bags.
Tina Norman-Ross, Recycling Officer said rather than making a special trip, islanders would be best to collect a supply when they go for other shopping essentials, or ask whoever is picking up groceries for them.
‘’We have all been advised to stay at home and avoid any unnecessary contact. We want islanders, including our own staff and the collection crews, to stay indoors to protect themselves and others, which is why our waste and recycling sites are currently closed.
“Household collections for waste and recycling are continuing as normal, so we would encourage anyone who has previously used the bring banks to make use of the kerbside service. It is simple, convenient and easy to use.’’
Which materials are collected kerbside?
Clear Bag - Paper and cardboard
Blue Bag - Tins and cans; plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays; foil; and milk and juice cartons o Glass bag (reusable) - bottle and jars, any colour. No Pyrex dishes or drinking glasses.
Where can I get recycling bags?
Kerbside recycling (blue/clear) bags and food waste caddy liners are available, free of charge, from most local supermarkets. Vouchers are usually required to obtain these however for the time being supermarkets will give out the bags and liners without these. o If anyone encounters any issues when trying to obtain these when out getting essential supplies then please contact Guernsey Waste (01481 231234 or email recycle@gov.gg).
Is there a limit to how many recycling bags I can put out?
No. You can put out as many as you need, provided materials are put out in the right bag on the correct night. Please do not overfill bags.
I don't have a food waste caddy or a glass bag.
Please contact Guernsey Waste (01481 231234 or email recycle@gov.gg) and we will arrange for one to be delivered.
What’s my collection night?
Most households have a single collection night each week. However there are some exceptions: o Households in St Sampson have their blue or clear bag recycling picked up Sunday night, and their other waste picked up on another night.
If you live in an apartment and have a communal area for waste and recycling, the arrangements may be slightly different. Speak to your management agent or landlord for more details.
