Where and how to watch the captivating Cavalcade

Thursday 09 May 2024

Whether it’s piling out onto the coast roads, inspecting the vehicles in town, or watching it unfold on a livestream, there’s plenty of opportunities to join in with the Liberation Day Cavalcade.

The tradition of hundreds of vehicles winding around the island has taken many forms over the years, and the route has been curtailed recently to help ageing cars complete the spectacle intact with the route no longer passing through St Martins or the Forest.

Around 100 military vehicles, motorbikes, classic cars and decorated tractors will travel from Torteval to St Peter Port this afternoon, culminating in a static display of vehicles on the Quay which will be pedestrianised all day.

Islanders are encouraged to head into driveways and coast roads to cheer them on during the three-hour cross-island spectacle.

The vehicles have been supplied by the Guernsey Military Vehicles Group, the Old Car Club, and others.

The procession starts at Torteval Church at 12:00 and will arrive on the coast outside the Imperial around 12:15. It will then head up to Pembroke over the following hour-and-a-quarter, with a 20-minute break at Vazon from 12:40 to allow any stragglers to catch up.

A short break will be taken at Pembroke, with decorated tractors joining in for the second leg of the route which is set to get going at 14:15 with the Cavalcade heading along Les Mielles Road towards Bordeaux and the Bridge by 14:30.

The vehicles will then trundle along the east coast passing the Halfway, Salarie Corner, and the Weighbridge before coming to a stop for two hours of inspections and chat on the Quay by 15:00.

All vehicles will be cleared from the road by 17:00 to allow for the Crown Pier concert to begin.

All times are approximate as there may be hitches on the day, but an online tracker is available HERE to allow you to track the progress of the fleet.

Social media updates will also be sent out on the day.

The States have positioned cameras at Cobo with a livestream planned for the pass by at approximately 13:00 for anyone unable to get out, or those off-island wanting to tune in. You can watch it HERE.

This year’s Cavalcade is being supported by builders CA Duquemin which is celebrating 100 years in business.
