Sark celebrates, as Guernsey reflects on a glorious Liberation Day

Friday 10 May 2024

The official photos of the 79th Liberation Day events in Guernsey have been published, with attention also turning to Sark as the anniversary is marked there today.

Chris George has shared his photos of May 9 2024 - with images capturing almost every aspect of the multiple events staged across Guernsey.

Mr George's official photos of the Liberation Day celebrations can be seen via his social media accounts; 'Georgie's Guernsey'.

The day's formal events officially started with the sounding of the air raid siren from Victoria Tower.

The honour of sounding the siren was bestowed on Helen Glencross, the Director of Heritage Services for Guernsey Museums.

From there, the formal commemorative events continued with island dignitaries gathering to witness the Bailiff placing a floral tribute at the island's main war memorial at the top of Smith Street.

He then met the Lieutenant Governor on the town quay for the military parade and Church Service.

Across the island, various events were held including the annual road race, and family activities at coastal locations.

Thousands of people spread across the route to watch the Cavalcade pass by, before a static display of the vehicles in town.

Music and other forms of entertainment were also put on in town, before a fireworks display closed the events in Guernsey.

While the Liberation is marked in Guernsey, Herm, and Jersey on 9 May each year, Sark waits until 10 May to commemorate and celebrate.

Today is the 79th anniversary of the day British soldiers landed on Sark and met with Dame Sybil Hathaway to confirm the liberation.

The liberation of Sark was confirmed at Rosebud Cottage in the island, where a German Commander signed the surrender documents.

In the immediate aftermath of Sark's liberation, the German Occupying Forces were put to work aiding the island's recovery. This included repairing damage to island infrastructure such as the Coupee.

Some of the visiting Chelsea Pensioners and Gurkhas are in Sark today to partake in the island's low key celebrations.
