WATCH: Residents urged to stay inside

Tuesday 27 February 2024

A barn on fire at L'ancresse is believed to contain asbestos material with police asking residents in the area to stay inside with their doors and windows shut while it is dealt with.

The fire was reported by a neighbour at 06:36, with Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service on the scene at 06:46.

Supported by Guernsey Police who closed off the roads in the area, the GFRS have been tackling the blaze ever since.

Three fire tenders and a fire officer were dispatched initially, with the original fire extinguished by 09:00. Les Mielles Road was reopened at that time, but the fire reignited meaning the fire crew had to tackle it again.

The road was shut while that was dealt with and it was still closed at 10:00.

A spokesperson for the emergency services said that: "As of 10:00, work to tackle the fire continues although it is largely under control at this point. Police and fire officers remain on the scene and enquiries are ongoing.

"The structure of the barn remained standing despite the blaze although it is likely there will be serious damage to its integrity. No one was in the barn and there were no injuries."

The fire was in a barn in the grounds of a farm house on Les Mielles Road which is the coast road leading from L'ancresse towards Bordeaux.

This is the fourth fire that the GFRS has had to deal with since Saturday.

During the early hours of 24 February the crew were called to the Octopus restaurant in St Peter Port, then on Sunday then had two further structure fires to deal with - at Rosaire Gardens in St Peter Port, and at Long Trac in St Martins.

No one was injured in any of the three fires over the weekend, nor today's barn fire.

The Octopus restaurant was completely destroyed in the fire, while the Long Trac fire left a barn damaged.

The fire at Rosaire Gardens was linked to a microwave.
