Deloitte is the largest accountancy firm in the world. In the Channel Islands, Deloitte offers a market leading salary with benefits as well as globally recognised qualifications.

Hear from Richard Bartram, Business Tax Consultant for Deloitte UK. Richard began his career in Guernsey at the age of 22.

I am a consultant in Deloitte’s London private tax team. I’m originally from Guernsey and went to University in Bath, after which I joined Deloitte as a graduate in February 2021. Outside of work, I’m a keen runner and a member of my local East London club as well as Guernsey Athletics. I’ve been able to manage my work life balance really well with Deloitte.

Q: Why did you choose initially to train with Deloitte Guernsey?

A: I attended a Careers Fair a few years ago and spoke with the Deloitte team. They were really helpful, friendly, and explained what their work involved and the kind of pathways we’d be on. This led to me applying for the Scholar Scheme, which I was lucky enough to be selected for just before I went to university.

Q: How has Deloitte supported you with progression in your career?

A: As part of the Scholar Scheme, I was offered work experience during the summer whilst at university. The financial support and practical work experience were both really useful and helped me understand what the business did and how it operated.

Q: Where are you now compared to where you started your role at Deloitte?

A: I have completed approximately half my exams. This helps directly with the work that we do. I’ve gained a lot of knowledge since I started last year, as well as developing my soft skills and responsibilities, and building relationships with clients as I develop my managerial skills.

Q: How has Deloitte Guernsey prepared you for working in London/elsewhere?

A: When I completed the scheme, Deloitte helped me apply directly to the London office. The practical work experience has been invaluable as I was already familiar with some of the systems and processes. This allowed me to hit the ground running.

Q: Is there anything you would say to graduates and school leavers who are beginning to think about where they should start their future career and why Deloitte is a great choice?

A: Deloitte offers great graduate and school leaver schemes that offer a good balance of exams, training and work. Coming straight into the industry from university, I found the balance really helpful as I was used to the exam structure. Deloitte has also adopted a ‘hybrid’ work policy, so you can choose how often you want to come into the office and also offers the opportunity to work abroad for dual nationality holders, like myself. I would definitely recommend Deloitte to school leavers and graduates.
