Guernsey win first game against Jersey in almost a decade

Monday 24 June 2024

Guernsey put an end to a losing streak that runs nearly 10 years in defeating Jersey at Port Soif yesterday.

It was the last game in a three match T20I series in which Jersey had won the first two matches in comfort.

You have to go back to 2015 at the same venue to find the last time Guernsey won a match against their inter insular rivals, that time it was in a 50 over clash.

Jersey were always strong favourites coming into the series, ranked at 25th in the world compared to Guernsey's 37 and with considerable experience playing against higher level opposition.

On Saturday the sides faced off at KGV, with Jersey easing through the run chase in the two games played.

In the opening match they were set 157 to win, seeing that off with 11 balls to spare with the loss of three wickets.

Jersey's Nick Greenwood was the player of the match, scoring 85 off 50 balls.

Young Charlie Forshaw made his Guernsey debut.

The men in red again won the toss in the second clash and again elected to field.

Guernsey were all out for 134 and Jersey took just 11.3 overs to take the win and the series.

Jonty Jenner topped scored with 80 and there were 41 runs from opener Harrison Carlyon.

But Sunday brought a new day, a new venue, and a turnaround for the Sarnians.

They elected to field and restricted the visitors to 148/8 in their 20 overs, with three wickets apiece for Forshaw and Martin Dale-Bradley.

When Dale-Bradley edged the winning two runs on the first ball of the 19th over, it snapped a long losing streak and should breath fresh confidence into the

Guernsey side ahead of a big summer which sees the island host a 10 team ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Sub-Regional Qualifying tournament.

Tom Nightingale was player of the match after scoring 61 off 26 balls including six fours and three sixes.
