Storm force ten on the way today

Friday 26 November 2021

The Bailiwick is expecting winds at force nine and possibly storm force ten from early this evening until midday on Saturday.

The Met Office has issued a red warning, which is the fourth and highest level of warning. The warning states: "north west gale force eight imminent - veering north storm force 10 later".

The States said: "The wind is likely to be storm force nine. However, it could reach force ten. It will be picking up this evening and is expected to peak at approximately 06:00 Saturday morning - dying down towards midday. The gale is expected to be coming from due north, which is very unusual for Guernsey."

Guernsey Police will be advising islanders to check things like garden furniture to make sure it is secure and to expect possible disruption on Saturday morning. People are also advised to avoid walking on the coast and sea swimming as the wind strengthens.

The strong winds are caused by Storm Arwen. The warning issued by the Met Office covers the area bound by the French coast between Cap de la Hague and Ile de Brehat, 50 degrees north and three degrees west.
