What's there to do this Bank Holiday weekend?

Friday 28 August 2020

People will be able to choose from a jam-packed schedule of events this weekend, with a music festival, treasure hunt, a balcony gig and even an Easter egg hunt.

Weather across the Summer Bank Holiday weekend looks set to be generally sunny, with the risk of some showers tomorrow, and cool, with highs of around 19 degrees.

Taking centre stage will be this year's Vale Earth Fair, one of the few music festivals to take place in the British Isles this summer.

With over 67 acts performing on Sunday, this year's festival has certainly 'revived and thrived'.

The line-up is a 'who's who' of local musical talent, including psychedelic headliners The Recks, folk favourites Buffalo Huddleston, and the return of heavy rockers Lord Vapour.

The Northern Churches Working Together Easter Fun Day is making a belated comeback on Saturday afternoon, after plans had to be put on ice earlier in the year due to the ban on large gatherings.

There will be free hot dogs and soup for everyone, free games and much more at Delancey Park including a number of family-friendly activities and craft stalls. There will even be an Easter egg hunt, to celebrate the time of year the fun day was originally scheduled to take place.

Another event this Saturday is the popular annual Castle Swim.

Swimmers will be gathering at the Slaughterhouse slipway from 14:30 to sign in, ready for the first batch of 50 swimmers to set off at 15:30. Swimmers are asked to make a minimum £3 donation for Guernsey Mind.

Even if the VEF isn't your thing, there's plenty more live music on Sunday.

The Cobo Balcony gigs will return three local bands - Element 6, Stoked and the Silverados - taking to the stage over the course of the afternoon and early evening.

While the Candie Concerts, presented by the Guernsey Arts Commission, will also be returning and people are being invited to take chairs, blankets and set up picnics at Candie Gardens.

We are also entering the last few days of the Smile for Georgie 10 sMile Treasure Hunt. The circular walking and cycling treasure hunt can be started from one of six points – La Villette, La Barbarie, Les Douvres, The Last Post, The Farmhouse and Le Gouffre.

The hunt can be completed in stages and is free but collection boxes are available at each starting point for donations. There will be some 30 questions to answer en-route and only those who answer all questions correctly by the end of play on Monday 31 August will be eligible to win the £100 prize, which will be drawn by the charity’s trustees on 1 September.
