WATCH: Clapping for...teachers

Friday 15 May 2020

Some of Guernsey's front line health workers took the time to pause and thank another group of key workers this week, with members of St John Ambulance clapping for teachers.

The Bailiwick's teachers have been working throughout the lockdown by either going into their schools to run physical lessons for the children of other key workers, or vulnerable children, or by working remotely offering distance learning to children of all ages.

Each Thursday evening, since the lockdown started during the last week of March, people have stood outside their homes and clapped for carers.

The movement started in Europe, where front line medical workers were loudly thanked for their efforts as covid-19 spread across the globe.

The UK adopted the initiative to show support for its NHS workers and other essential employees, with the Channel Islands following suit when the virus reached our shores.

Last night, St John Ambulance wanted to thank teachers, with many of their own staff and volunteers' children still being cared for by school staff.

A spokesman said:

"This evening staff and volunteers from St John Ambulance Guernsey joined nursing representatives to show our support for the teachers and school workers across the island who have been looking after the children of key workers during the coronavirus pandemic.

"We’d like to extend our appreciation ALL essential workers who have been keeping the community going during the crisis."
