WATCH: Vulnerable man needs help

Tuesday 14 January 2020

A man who has been missing since Saturday needs his medication and professional support, say Guernsey Police, as they urge anyone who has seen Matthew Bourgaize to contact them so they can help him.

The 29-year-old was last seen shortly before 15:00 on Saturday 11 January, when he left the Oberlands Centre at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital.

He was caught on CCTV then, but there have been no confirmed sightings of him since.

Officers, who have been trained using techniques considered 'best practice' in the UK, have been looking for Mr Bourgaize in areas he is known to frequent as well as visiting the homes of his friends and family. Guernsey Police say Mr Bourgaize's mother and his girlfriend have been offered support and are being kept up to date on any developments in the search for him.

Acting Superintendent Clare Cuthbert gave a press conference at Guernsey Police station on Tuesday 14 January, where she outlined what has been done so far to find Mr Bourgaize.

Acting Superintendent Cuthbert said this was to be treated as an "urgent appeal for information that may help locate 29-year-old Matthew Bourgaize who was last seen on the afternoon of Saturday 11 January."

Acting Superintendent Cuthbert confirmed Mr Bourgaize was a patient at the Oberlands facility, where he was in the foyer area for an agreed visit with family and/or friends at the time he disappeared.

He was captured on CCTV as he left the Oberlands foyer area at 14:50 on Saturday 11 January, wearing a distinctive coat with a fur trim.

"As there have been no further sightings or information relating to his whereabouts so far, Guernsey Police are very concerned for his welfare," said Acting Superintendent Cuthbert.

She also confirmed the action taken since Mr Bourgaize was last seen.

"Law Enforcement officers and other agencies have been searching relevant locations, examining CCTV and have sought to speak with friends and associates who we had hoped may have had some information but as yet this has brought us no closer to finding Matthew.

"Several photos have been shared with the media, and are being circulated on social media including on the Guernsey Police Facebook page. We would encourage the public to look at these and keep their eyes open for Matthew. If anyone has useful information, or believes they have seen him, please contact Guernsey Police immediately on 01481 725111. This is the best way members of the public can support us in our search."

Guernsey Police have been in close contact with Mr Bourgaize's family, "who are of course extremely worried," said Acting Superintendent Cuthbert.

"If this message reaches Matthew we would encourage him to make himself known to us, so we can ensure he receives all the care and support he needs."
