Unite: 'Our door is open, States'

Wednesday 29 May 2019

Unite members are frustrated at the States' reliance on 'third party intervention' to resolve the dispute they are in over their employee's pay.

States' staff who are members of Unite the Union are striking today because negotiations over that pay deal recently broke down.

The States this morning expressed exasperation at how the Union had gone ahead with the strike, even after they felt there was a clear path to a resolution.

But in a statement issued to Express this afternoon, Unite was not so optimistic.

"Unite senior reps met today in the Unite Office and this group remains frustrated at the States reliance on third party intervention when they should be getting round the table and having proper meaningful discussion," it said.

"Unite's door remains open and we are willing to meet the States at any time.”

The full strike, where staff are not working at all, is expected to continue until midnight tonight. That is excluding essential services like the hospital and the airport. But things could continue until the end of the week, as staff are saying they feel they need to take action for longer to have their message heard. To do this, they are planning on 'working to rule' for three days, which means they will not work any overtime.
