Traffic safety talks after child knocked over

Monday 06 February 2023

A number of issues are said to have been raised by the recent accident near Blanchelande College which saw a student knocked to the ground after getting off a bus.

The school's principal confirmed to pupils, staff, parents and carers on Friday that "thankfully the student will be ok".

The girl is believed to have been struck after disembarking from the bus before trying to cross the road to the pavement on the other side of the road.

She had been checked over by paramedics at the scene of the accident before her parents took her home for the day to rest.

Robert O'Brien emailed parents and carers to confirm the accident, which happened on Rue Frairies shortly before lessons began on Friday morning, had involved a student and that support was being offered to any other pupil who had seen her being knocked over.

He later confirmed in the weekly school newsletter that she will be ok - but that the accident had raised issues regarding the "location and nature of the bus stops used by our students", as well as "a number of other issues".

The bus driver was seen to comfort the girl while Guernsey Police closed the road and paramedics assessed the child.

A spokesperson for Tower Transit confirmed the firm is now helping to improve safety in the area.

"We can confirm that we have been in contact with Traffic and Highways Services and the driver remained at the scene to assist where possible in keeping the student as comfortable as possible, including the use of the drivers jacket.

"We would urge all drivers to be vigilant when passing any bus at a bus stop, particularly in the vicinity of a school."

There is no school bus service to Blanchelande, with some pupils catching public buses to and from lessons, with bus stops on Rue Frairies and Les Vauxbelets.

Mr O'Brien said that meetings are now being planned between the college and the "relevant authorities" to discuss ways of making pedestrian and bus journeys to school safer. They are due to be held this week.

Mr O'Brien also said that parental input will be requested before any changes are made. Parents were advised they could contact the Traffic and Highways Services department and Deputies personally if they felt they had something to say.
