One of Guernsey's longest serving Customs Officers has retired, with his colleagues at Bailiwick Law Enforcement having to make do with wishing him a socially distanced fond farewell in between washing their hands regularly.
Adie Wright first joined what is now known as the Guernsey Border Agency in 1990.
Before that he had worked at Beaucette Marina as Harbourmaster for three years, after moving to Guernsey from the UK. Previously he had been a clearance diver in the Royal Navy.
In his three decades with customs, Mr Wright has held a wide range of roles including: Investigation Officer, Intelligence Officer and Senior Customs Officer. He has ended his career as a Senior Intelligence Officer, which is a position he has held since 2010.
“It has been the most incredible and wonderful 30 years working for the Guernsey Border Agency. I am proud of the work I have done and the contribution I have made to keeping the Bailiwick safe and secure," Mr Wright said on his retirement earlier last week.
“It was a difficult decision to leave, but I have decided that now is the right time for me to go. I will miss the work, but, above all, I will miss the people.”
On his last day at work, he gathered remotely with colleagues from Bailiwick Law Enforcement - which covers Guernsey Border Agency, Guernsey Police and Trading Standards. Mr Wright gave a speech, with other colleagues calling in remotely to join in.
Head of Law Enforcement Ruari Hardy said: “Adie Wright is a popular member of staff and the knowledge he has gained through his three decades of service meant he was extremely well versed and respected in multiple aspects of the GBAs work. His retirement will leave a big gap in the organisation, but I would like to publically thank him for his contribution over his many years of public service. Everyone across the organisation wishes him a very happy and healthy retirement.”
