Teenage girl sentenced for numerous driving offences and assault

A 17 year old girl has been given a number of suspended sentences, community service orders and fines after admitting stealing a car and a number of other offences.

The young woman appeared before Guernsey's Magistrate Court during a Juvenile hearing yesterday after being arrested in January for the motoring offences. She was also sentenced during the same court hearing for an earlier assault, committed last summer.

The teenager was given 80 hours community service for that assault, as a direct alternative to two months youth detention. She had assaulted a younger girl, who was 16 at the time of the offence, during an incident at the North Plantation in St Peter Port on 11 August 2017. 

On January 20 2018, the 17 year old was arrested at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital for the motoring offences which included:

• driving while under the influence of alcohol
• taking a vehicle without the owner's consent
• driving a vehicle without insurance
• driving a vehicle while only holding a provisional driving licence and with a co-driver who themselves had been driving for less than 12 months
• driving a vehicle without an L plate showing, while only holding a provisional licence

The teenager was given a two months sentence in youth detention, suspended for two years plus a three year driving ban, for the drink driving offence having refused to provide a sample when questioned. 

The sentence for taking the vehicle without the owner's consent was three months in youth detention, suspended for two years, while a further one month youth detention, suspended for two years was handed down for driving without insurance. 

The teenager was also ordered to pay a £50 fine for each offence of driving without a full licence and without an appropriate co-driver and for driving without L plates showing.
