Taxi fares increase from today

Monday 17 January 2022

The maximum taxi fare went up by 3.34% overnight after a two-year freeze in fares came to an end.

Taxi fares were last increased on 31 January 2020. At the beginning of 2021, the States' Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure agreed with the Taxi Owners' Federation not to implement an annual increase in tariff charges because they would have gone up by less than 1% based on the established formula used to calculate them.

The increase which take effect today in effect combines the increase there would have been last year with the increase due this year.

Based on the two most common tariffs, the following example fares demonstrate the overall effects of the increase:

A journey of two miles on Tariff One will increase by 20p from £7.10 to £7.30.

A journey of five miles on Tariff One will increase by 60p from £13.30 to £13.90.

A journey of two miles on Tariff Two will increase by 40p from £9.90 to £10.30.

A journey of five miles on Tariff Two will increase by 60p from £18.70 to £19.30.

Tariff One is for a maximum of four passengers and operates Monday – Friday between 07:00 and 10:00 and Saturday and Sunday between 07:00 and 19:00.

Tariff Two is for a maximum of four passengers and operates Monday – Friday between 22:00 and 07:00 and Saturday and Sunday between 19:00 and 07:00 and at all times on Public Holidays.

The minimum fare - a standing charge - will remain at £4.50 and there will be no increase in the baggage charge of 20p per item.

The figures are calculated based on an established taxi inflation index known as the Halcrow Formula, which takes into account taxi operating costs and earnings.
