Guernsey's Revenue Service has admitted some people have not been allocated a personal allowance for their income tax for this year.
The acknowledgment comes after a number of complaints from tax payers over the mistakes made.
In response to questions posed by Express, the Revenue Service issued the statement below which included an apology.
"In line with previous years, the 2023 coding notices are generated based on the allowances customers had in their 2022 coding notice. This is because the 2022 coding notice will be more up-to-date than the latest return submitted which is likely to be for 2021. Where allowances depend on personal circumstance, for example the charge of child allowance, then customers need to advise that they continue to meet the criteria to claim that allowance, for their 2023 coding to be updated. This is not a new approach.
"While in the vast majority of cases there has not been an issue, it has been identified that some customers were not allocated a personal allowance, generally where the allowance was transferred to their spouse in their 2022 coding notice. Updated coding notices are being issued either when the customer makes contact, or as identified by the service.
"If too much tax has been deducted from that customer’s pay as a result, then a direction notice can be issued to the employer asking them to refund that amount to the employee. This is because the employer still holds the ETI deducted (not the service) until 15 April 2023, which is the deadline for submitting the first quarter employer return and the ETI."

This issue follows other recent mistakes made by the Revenue Service which included sending letters to thousands of pensioners requesting they pay three times as much for their social security contributions than were necessary.
Since publishing a report on that mistake last week, Express has received emails from tax payers outlining further concerns over personal allowances not being allocated, or tax coding notices not being issued.
