Survey planned after roof tile drama

Wednesday 19 December 2018

With the forecourt having to be closed during strong winds to stop anyone being hit by a flying tile, Guernsey Airport has now commissioned a survey of its roof.

The drama initially unfolded yesterday morning, when stormy weather meant some flights were delayed or cancelled which in itself isn't unusual for Guernsey Airport.

But, the weather took some people by surprise yesterday when it forced the closure of the area in front of the terminal building.

A statement was issued at 10:00 explaining that there was a "risk of external panels above the arrivals and departure exits falling" with a warning to passengers and other users that they should use the main car park instead and follow any instructions from airport staff.

The forecourt was open again by midday, but the Fire and Rescue Service had been called out to check it over first. While they won't comment further, Guernsey Airport has said that a survey has now been arranged to find out what repairs are needed, and also how much it may cost.

Guernsey Airport Spokesman also confirmed that the closure had been a "precautionary measure" and no one was hurt during the time the forecourt was shut to the public.

"Guernsey Airport had closed the forecourt area, as there could have been a risk of a couple of external roof panels above the departures entrance falling, due to the direction and the speed of the winds today," said the spokesman in a statement.

"We thank the Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service for the use of its turntable ladder to examine the affected panels and to temporarily repair them to make the area safe for public use.

"The forecourt has now fully reopened and airport users can use the drop off and pick up points, the taxi rank and bus stops as normal."

The survey which is now going to be carried out will "determine the next course of action on what repairs are needed to the roof structure, and any associated costs."

It will also be used in making plans for any "longer term modifications to reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.”
