Street food parties return to seafront this Sunday

Monday 01 May 2023

A wide range of stalls serving up local produce will again grace the Town Quay throughout the summer, with the first Eat, Drink and Be Local event on 7 May – coinciding with coronation celebrations.

Similar street parties will follow on 25 June, 6 August, and 13 August, with the action centered around Crown Pier.

But the first has a special meaning, as it falls on the same day as the Coronation Big Lunch – part of official UK-wide celebrations – the day after King Charles III is formally crowned.

This year will also see greater emphasis on sustainability, with the organisers taking steps to reduce plastic waste by introducing biodegradable cups featuring a design from a local artist.

Alongside food and drink, local talent from the arts sector will also be on show, through craft and artisan stalls. Many of the seafront restaurants and bars will also open their al fresco areas and, there will be live music at each event.

Luke Wheadon, Chair of EDABL, said it's great to be able to promote local businesses once again through the events: “EDABL is committed to creating opportunities for producers and entrepreneurs within the Bailiwick and the street parties act as a platform to celebrate and promote their products within our community."

"They highlight the huge wealth of talent here in Guernsey and show the importance of supporting local businesses. The events always have an incredible atmosphere, and we hope both islanders and tourists alike will enjoy their return,” added Chris Humber, also on the committee.

James and Emma Meller have been instrumental in introducing a more sustainable approach to the events through the recyclable cups.

Mr Meller said they are “PE and PLA plastic free and made from sustainably sourced paper grown from Scandinavian forests which is then manufactured in the UK.

‘We worked with local artist James Colmer on the artwork used on the cup and are delighted with the final result, which we believe is a wonderful representation of the colourful, lively and fun events the street parties are."

Ms Meller said the committee is working with stalls to ensure these are used instead of alternatives.
