States meet to mourn

Saturday 10 September 2022

All but one deputy attended a special meeting of the States to mourn the loss of the monarch, at which the large portrait of The Queen hanging at the back of the Royal Court was strikingly shrouded in a black cloth.

States matters were due to be discussed in the chamber yesterday, but the sudden death of the Monarch less than a day earlier side-lined the usual order of business.

Instead, a special 20-minute sitting was called to allow the Bailiff and Chief Minister to pay personal tributes.

Deputy Chris Blin, the President of the Overseas Aid & Development Commission, attended the States' meeting earlier in the week, but then left the island on States'  business and could not attend the meeting to pay respects to the Queen.

In his introductory speech, Bailiff Richard McMahon made notice of Queen Elizabeth II’s death.

“She will be remembered with great affection across our islands, which she visited on six memorable occasions. We gather to mourn the passing of our beloved Queen, who reigned over us for 70 years -longer than any other monarch in British history,” he said.

“It is with profound sorry that we meet today… by the grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of her other realms and territories, Queen, head of Commonwealth, defender of the faith and, to which I add, successor to the Dukes of Normandy.

“Her Majesty meant so much to so many and enjoyed a long and truly remarkable life. We join with others across the world in mourning her loss.”

Deputy Peter Ferbrache, the island’s most senior politician, added: “Of course I am saddened that Her Majesty has died, but I am honored to be asked to pay tribute to her in this Assembly.

“Guernsey is a dependency of the Crown; we have allegiance to the monarch in his or her capacity as successor to the Dukes of Normandy.

“Guernsey continues in its strong allegiance to the Crown… in the coming days we will observe many marks of respect and mourning, and we will hear many well-deserved tributes to Her Majesty The Queen.

“I never had the privilege of meeting Her Majesty The Queen but was present when Her Majesty visited the island during her reign. I was struck by her total attention to the event. Some people from the Bailiwick will have met Her Majesty and I’m sure they will treasure their own personal memories of those meetings.

“Her example will continue to inspire for many, many years to come.”
