St John Ambulance needs volunteers

Friday 12 January 2018

Guernsey's ambulance service needs more volunteers to help staff keep the island's community service running.

They say you don't need any experience as full training will be given, but you could end up helping out at some of the island's biggest events including music festivals, sport competitions and Liberation Day.

In a plea to the public, St John Ambulance said it is hoping to attract people who have made new year's resolutions to help others more in areas including First Aiders and Youth Leaders. St John First Aiders also provide medical cover at events across Guernsey throughout the year.

Nikki Harrison, Operations Manager, said: “We have a wide variety of roles that people can get involved with at St John. Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds, so whatever your interests or skills there is something for you. Volunteering is a great way to meet like-minded people, learn something new and give something back to your community.”

Volunteers don’t need prior first aid knowledge as an induction and specific training is provided, followed by regular assessments to ensure skills are kept up-to-date.

Youth leaders help teach first aid to Cadets and Badgers, with weekly meetings, social activities and competitions. Cadets and Badgers have previously gone on to be paramedics and nurses when they've grown up so this is considered a vital role within the organisation.

Volunteers are also needed to help in other areas including administration and fundraising. The only requirement for any volunteer is that you are over 18 years old.

To find out more go to a Volunteer Open Day on Sunday 28 January between 13:00 and 16:00 at St John Ambulance HQ on the Rohais.
