St James receives £25k support from GSY Community Foundation

The Guernsey Community Foundation has helped St James climb out of financial difficulty by funding its operational costs in 2023.

The iconic venue has been struggling after covid impacted ticket sales, forcing it to dip into financial reserves to keep operating.

The Foundation has given St James £25,000 and promised to support the charity in 2024, offering to underwrite certain costs.

Lamenting its difficult position, the Executive Director of St James, Jon Bisson said the venue is an important resource to the island’s population.

“Its loss would be felt by the over 40 charities it supports and the 40,000 people who attended events in the last year,” he said.

He said the charity is launching several new initiatives to try and protect the future of St James.

“The breathing space afforded by the Foundation’s underwrite allows us to launch these new policies and let them develop while the world around us settles into its new norm.”

The Foundation gives more than a quarter-of-a-million to charity every year and chose to support St James because it is a “treasured venue”.

“The Foundation is happy to assist in a way which gives Mr Bisson time to put into practice ambitious plans to make St James more sustainable by attracting larger audiences and corporate customers,” said Chief Executive of the Foundation, Jim Roberts.
