SoA remains largest employer

Tuesday 10 September 2024

The States of Alderney remains the island's largest employer by quite some margin, according to the latest data published giving an insight into who is doing what.

The island's Employment Bulletin for the first quarter of this year was published earlier this month.

It shows that in March this year, 863 people - out of the island's population of 2,167 (at March 2023) - were either employed or self-employed in Alderney.

That is a small increase of just 0.5% on the previous year.

The vast majority - 702 people - work for an employer while 161 people are self employed.

Comparing this to data from 2023 shows that there is now one less person self employed in Alderney while five more work for other people.

There have also been three new businesses created in Alderney over the past year.

Out of all the people working in Alderney, the majority (20%) work for the States with 183 employed in 'public administration' - an increase of 13 on the year before.

Of the other employing sectors in Alderney,  the 'human health and social work activities' sector showed the largest increase in the number of people employed (+16) while the 'financial and insurance activities' sector showed the largest decrease (-15).
