Sexual assault reported in St Peter Port

Thursday 28 March 2019

Two taxi drivers could help find a man accused of indecently touching a woman as she walked home from a night out in St Peter Port.

The victim was followed as she left town and walked towards Elm Grove, in the early hours of last Sunday morning.

Guernsey Police said they are appealing for witnesses, but that two taxis in particular may have seen the victim as she walked up Candie Road.

The victim was alone when she left Les Folies D’Amour Nightclub, at around 02:20 on Sunday 24 March. She then walked through Le Pollet, towards the High Street and turned right onto La Plaiderie (opposite Christies restaurant) and walked up past the Police Station and then up Hospital Lane. It was around here that she realised a man, wearing dark clothing was following her.

She crossed St Julian’s Avenue and walked up Candie Road where she said the man continued to follow her and began making sexual remarks.

She told Guernsey Police that she took her shoes off so she could run towards Elm Grove, but he allegedly chased her, before catching her and touching her inappropriately. She managed to escape and was physically uninjured.

Police Officer Kieran Walsh is investigating the case and said: “A number of officers are working hard to identify the male in question, including reviewing CCTV we have access to. If anyone has anything they think can help – including dash cam footage, private CCTV or saw or heard anything suspicious I urge them to get in contact. What seems trivial to you could be the key bit of information for us to find out who this man is.

“We know that two taxis drove past the female as she was walking up Candie Road at roughly 02:30 and we would be interested in speaking with these drivers specifically."

PO Walsh said these kind of incidents remain unusual in Guernsey but he offered safety advice to anyone going out at night.

“I would stress these incidents are extremely rare in Guernsey, but what we want to make sure is that the “how am I safely getting home” conversation is part of your going out routine. Our advice is to walk home with someone you trust, stay within well-lit areas, message your friends when you get back safely, and have easy access to your phone. There are free safety apps for your phone, including Hollie Guard, which we would recommend.”
