Special service held at Town Church

Sunday 27 February 2022

People of all faiths and none gathered at the Town Church on Sunday "for a service of prayers for peace and for the people of Ukraine".

The service was organised by the local leaders of the Anglican, Methodist, Catholic, Elim Pentecostal and Baptist Churches. It included lighting candles in solidarity with those suffering in Ukraine.

Church services held across the island on Sunday included a statement issued by the local Church leaders which condemned what they called "the unprovoked attack" on Kyiv on other Ukrainian cities launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent days.

"We share the horror and dismay of all people of good will at the unprovoked attack on Ukraine by Russian forces," they said.

"We pray for the people of Ukraine in their understandable fear and for an end to this conflict.

"We pray for the Church in the Ukraine as our brothers and sisters in Christ.

"We pray, too, for politicians in the West as they consider their response to the events of recent days and for those who serve in the armed forces of NATO.

"We are aware that people in Guernsey will be deeply concerned about friends and family members living in Ukraine. We offer them our love and sympathy.

"The Latvian community in Guernsey, and those from other countries which share a border with Russia and Ukraine, are much in our thoughts and prayers."

The local Christian leaders also said they "support the call of Pope Francis and the Archbishop of Canterbury for a global day of prayer and fasting for peace on Ash Wednesday, 2 March 2022".

The statement was issued jointly by:

  • The Very Reverend Tim Barker, Dean of Guernsey;
  • The Reverend Nicole Le Goupillot, Elim churches in Guernsey;
  • Pastor John Ogier, Spurgeon Baptist Church;
  • The Reverend Canon Christopher Rutledge, Catholic Dean of the Bailiwick; and
  • The Reverend Howard Stringer, Superintendent Minister, Bailiwick Circuit, The Methodist Church
