Sercquais joins Guernesiais at the Eisteddfod

Friday 13 March 2020

A group of Sark school children will be performing in their island's own native language as part of a special feature at this year's Eisteddfod Guernesiais.

They'll be first on the stage at the children's section of this year's event, before pupils from Guernsey schools tackle pieces performed in their own language too.

It's believed to be the first time Sercquais has been performed at the Eisteddfod, after the children spent time working with a PhD student from the Czech Republic, who has been visiting Sark for the past three years to discover more about its history.

The event starts today, at 14:00 with the Sark performance at the Frossard Theatre at Guernsey Museum at Candie. It will be free of charge to go and watch.

Geoffrey Mahy, the Executive Officer for Guernesiais introduced this class for entrants from other islands in 2019 with Alderney taking part then.

“I am delighted that Sark School are prepared to come to Guernsey to showcase their new language skills," he said. "Last year we received entries from Alderney. Perhaps in 2021 we will see competitors from Jersey!”

The Eisteddfod Guernesiais will continue until the end of the month with adult performances of songs, poems, readings and sketches due to be held on Monday 16 March at Shiloh Main Hall, Les Landes du Marché, from 19:00.

The children’s session will close the Eisteddfod on Monday 23 March from 16:30 at Forest Primary School, with pupils from five schools competing.

As part of efforts to make Eisteddfod Guernesiais more accessible, there will be a synopsis given in English before each performance, in each class, to help everyone understand what is going on.

Pierre Tostevin is this year's adjudicator.

The entry fee for the main Junior and Adult sessions is £2.00 per adult and £1.00 for concessions.
