SEL rescheduled meeting tonight

Tuesday 20 September 2022

A meeting over the future of Sark Electricity, which was postponed following the death of the Queen, will be held tonight, with an invitation to everyone in the island to attend if possible

The owner of SEL, Alan Witney Price (pictured above) said he'll be covering a "range of energy related topics".

He said: "Following my decision to delay the public meeting due last week, out of respect for the passing of Her Majesty; I would like to invite all residents to a public presentation on a range of energy related topics that impact residents, business operators and landowners."

Acknowledging the "significant public interest, for openness and transparency" he informed the media of the planned agenda.

He said he'll be talking through a number of different matters, including the ownership of Sark Electricity Limited, which has been subject to dispute since before the death of the former owner, David Gordon-Brown. Mr Witney-Price bought the business from his estate in 2020.

There have been contentious negotiations between SEL and Chief Pleas over the years, with the latter wanting to buy the business. Mr Witney-Price will update residents on the "'negotiations’ with P&F for the forced acquisition of SEL" tonight.

Sark is known to have among the highest prices in the world for electricity per unit. Mr Witney-Price said SEL’s new pricing policy, due to take effect from October 2022, will also be discussed tonight, along with plans for renewable energy and current barriers to any developments in that sphere.

Grid transformation plans; and current barriers to that, and economic development plans; and current barriers to that, will also be discussed.

Recognising that many people will undoubtedly have questions about some of the above topics and what may be discussed tonight, Mr Witney-Price has arranged time to go through any queries tomorrow.

"This presentation is not intended as a question-and-answer event, although I will be available for follow up meetings during the following day on Wednesday 21 September at the Power Station. I invite you to reach out and grab a slot if you have a particular area of interest or matters that I may not have covered on the evening in sufficient detail.

"I encourage all residents to attend if at all possible; especially, our elected representatives of Government."

The meeting is being held at 17:00 today, 20 September at The Island Hall.
