Schools to stay shut to all students

Monday 01 February 2021

Schools will not re-open to children of key workers this week, as more time is needed to develop on-site testing facilities.

The Civil Contingencies Authority indicated early last week that educational settings would not be re-opening to any pupils in the first week of February.

Since then, the number of cases locally has risen to 231, while the Public Health team has started to trace positive cases back to the Festival of Dance.

Anyone who attended that between Tuesday 19 and Friday 22 January has now been told to go into immediate self-isolation, eight days after the island went into lockdown following the emergence of community seeding.

A distance learning programme has been produced for students during lockdown and education will continue to be delivered remotely for the foreseeable future.

Education has said that re-opening schools as soon as is safely possible remains a "priority".

"This decision [to keep schools closed to all students next week] has been taken to allow more time for the development of robust plans for a testing system which will facilitate settings reopening to the children of critical workers," said a spokesperson for the committee.

"Work is now well underway to put this system in place. In the meantime, sites will remain closed to ensure that the risk of Covid-19 being spread through settings is as minimal as possible.

"Reopening sites as soon as is safely possible remains a priority and this is why a decision was made earlier in the week to keep settings closed on Monday. The decision today extends this arrangement for a further four days

"During this period of extended closure, staff across Education and care services will continue to be in contact with the most vulnerable learners.
