School starts for Guernsey's teachers

Tuesday 03 September 2024

Two days before the start of term, all of Guernsey's States school teachers have been invited to a conference discussing new codes of practice and the digital transformation underway across each of their schools.

Teachers from across the primary, special, and secondary settings were all invited to the Education-wide conference.

It is said to be focusing on "some significant changes across Education in relation to the new Code of Practice for Additional Learning Needs (ALN) and the digital transformation which is underway across all schools".

The Director of Education Nick Hynes is set to lead the talks with the 'launch' for teachers today.

He'll give an introduction speech at 09:00 before Dr Julie Wharton, a Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Education at Winchester University gives a talk focused on the Additional Learning Needs Code of Practice.

Clare Sealy; the island's Head of Education Improvement, and Colette Watts; the Head of Guernsey's Communication, Interaction, and Autism Service, will then lead a discussion on 'High Quality Inclusive Practice' and what this means for teachers.

Later this morning, the conference's focus will turn to digital matters with a talk on 'The Power of Digital' led by Sam O'Leary, the Head of Training at Tablet Academy.

A spokesperson for Education, Sport, and Culture said: "This is the first time in Guernsey that all teachers are meeting together to share a deeper understanding of our Education Strategy and how key initiatives taking place will help us to deliver the Strategy overall. We have a range of speakers covering this important event, both local and national."
