School children could be offered the opportunity to visit Senegal

Wednesday 18 May 2022

Education Services and the Overseas Aid & Development Commission are working together to develop school trips to Senegal.

In 2018 the OA&DC committed to co-fund several projects with the French regional department of Illes-et-Villaine. These projects include building schools and medical clinics and are based in French-speaking Africa.

Member of the Policy & Resources Committee and lead on external relations, Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq, said the island has been co-funding initiatives for the last three years.

“One of the things we’re planning to do on the back of that is to send some people to Senegal to see these projects and see what they’ve done,” he said.

“The young person will be able to stay for a week and take part in some activities with young people there.”

Deputy Le Tocq spoke to his colleagues in France about the initiatives during an annual summit held in Rennes.

Guernsey is part of a cooperative agreement between the French regional department of Illes-et-Villaine and Jersey. All three jurisdictions meet annually to discuss joint-working initiatives.

The school trips would be organised through Education Services in Guernsey.

“Education and overseas aid are working with the department to facilitate that and the students will be able to go with a group of French schoolchildren,” said Deputy Le Tocq.
