Dairy searching for cream of the crop

Artisans are being challenged to come up with new products using Guernsey milk – with flavoured butter, yogurt, crème fraiche, cheeses or perhaps a cream liquor among the many suggestions floated.

Guernsey Dairy is asking for expressions of interest from any businesses or individuals interested in producing "high quality food products" that complement its current range.

Guernsey Dairy processes around 7.6 million litres of raw milk a year, however there is some residual milk left over during the production process.

The Dairy’s Managing Director, Andrew Tabel, said this could be made available for resale for others to manufacture products of their own.

There are already some local businesses who use Guernsey milk to produce ‘own label’ ice cream, cheese and yoghurt – such as Le Hechet Farm Ice Cream, Torteval Cheese and Smithfield Farm Guernsey Luxury Yogurt.

“We are seeking expressions of interest from existing businesses or individuals who are attracted to producing high quality milk derived products – such as flavoured butter, yogurt, crème fraiche, ice cream, artisanal cheeses or perhaps a cream liquor that will appeal to the local market," said Mr Tabel.

“Interested parties will need to be able to demonstrate high quality food manufacturing standards, excellent customer service, and offer the consumer a local alternative to our mainstream products.”

Michael Bray, President of Guernsey Farmers Association, said that this initiative opens up new possibilities for people looking to add to an existing business, or to those looking at a possible change in career.

“Our island's cows produce a high butterfat, high protein product, rich in natural minerals that can be turned into a range of new dairy products,” he said.

“These products would help to provide the island with a more sustainable future for the dairy industry and, in addition, reduce our reliance on imported dairy products.”

‘Expressions of Interest’ are required in writing to gary.rouget@gov.gg or via the E-Tender Portal by 22 October 2021.
