Saffery Rotary Walk t-shirts head to South Africa

Thursday 11 April 2019

Participants of last year’s Saffery Rotary Walk have donated their official Walk t-shirts to the Charles Duna Primary School in South Africa.

The local branch of the Inner Wheel Club, an international organisation closely linked to the Rotary Club, has been encouraging walkers to donate their t-shirts to communities or charities in need of clothing.

Gill Girard from Inner Wheel, who chose the Charles Duna Primary School as the one of the recipients, said: “I knew about the school from a recent trip to South Africa.

"When I first arrived at the school I immediately noticed a row of sports shirts drying on a fence and I discovered that every child had to wash their shirt immediately after the lesson so that the next class could use them. It quickly occurred to me that they might quite welcome the t-shirts from the Walk so I suggested they become one of beneficiaries of the initiative. It’s a small gesture but it could have a huge impact on these bright young students.”

Charles Duna Primary School, based in Port Elizabeth, aims to educate children and provide them with the essential skills required to fulfil their potential.

Amanda Milsted, International Officer of Inner Wheel in Guernsey said; "Each year we encourage walkers to donate their t-shirts and we’re extremely grateful that we get such a good response. We will continue to do the same after the 2019 Walk so if you’re walking this year then please do check on the Saffery Rotary Walk social accounts for when and where to drop-off your t-shirts."

The Saffery Rotary Walk is one of the island's largest charity fundraising events and has supported dozens of charitable causes over the past 20 years. Last year over £60,000 was distributed between 20 charities, and this year there are 23 charities set to receive funds.
