Rusty metal, fibreglass and "massive sponge-like object"among Ladies' beach clean finds

Sunday 09 June 2019

The Ladies' College Senior and Melrose PTA's have joined forces to organise a family beach clean up event at Tiger Bay (Champ Rouget) and Chouet Beach.

Children of all ages, parents, grandparents, teachers and PTA members gave up their time to collect beach litter.

Laura Bampton, an alumna of the College, who heads up the Marine Biology Section of the La Societe Guernesiaise, supported the event by sharing the importance of safeguarding Guernsey's beaches and also by supplying protective gloves and bags.

The range of debris collected during the beach clean up included an oil filter, lots of old discarded rope, fibreglass from boats and cars, a car mat, plastic hose, a rusty metal stake, a metal pole, golf balls, a rug and a "massive sponge-like" object. This was over and above the normal debris such as plastic, glass, paper and cigarette butts.

"We would like to say a biig thank you to everybody who attended the event as Beach Cleaning is a wonderful, healthy and often fun activity that is supporting the local environment for us all to enjoy," said a spokesperson for the College. "It is also satisfying to know that every piece of plastic or debris removed from the beach will no longer harm wildlife or potentially end up in the food chain."
