"The 60s and 70s were overflowing with wondrous clothes, from the geometric shift dresses and bright colours of the unconventional mods to the floral patterns and bell bottomed flares of the free loving hippies," a spokesperson for the festival said.

"Fashion, music and social change dominated the 1960s and youth subcultures such as the 'Mods & Rockers' surged. This was the first time ever that teenagers could and would dress significantly differently from their parents.

"Twiggy was a leading style icon as she embraced a boyish silhouette which contrasted the curves of the 50s. Never in history had the length of women skirts been shorter and the mini-skirt became an important symbol in the movement towards women's rights.

"The liberated fashion indicated more progressive views of the new generation."

Local collector, Grace Ruddy, has agreed to display her extensive collection of '60s and '70s clothing at the festival, including designs from Thea Porter, Ossie Clark, Bill Gibbs, Pucci and Jean Varon, along with many other original items - some of which have previously taken pride of place at the V&A Museum in London.

With the help of vintage fashion enthusiast, Joni Free, a collection of the dresses will be on display at the Peninsula on 15 and 16 August. But, for anyone who can't make it to the festival this weekend, a fashion show of the full collection will be held on 20 September in Market Square, as part of the Guernsey Retro Festival's next planned event.

In the meantime, those passing through Town have the chance to spot part of the collection in the window of Health Connections.

Organisers are keen for all festival-goers to support the retro theme by dressing up themselves, and a dedicated rail of retro-inspired clothing will be available at the event.

Other retro stalls will include flares and earrings from local designer, Maisie Bisson, and a hippie selection of clothes and jewellery from Lucy Corbin of Gaias Web and Saiko.
